From 5 to 24 June 2018, the Morsleben Information Centre will be offering a wide range of activities above and below ground with special thematic focuses as part of the “Salty Tour”.

Morsleben Information Centre takes part in the “Salty Tour”

From 5 to 24 June 2018, the Morsleben Information Centre will be offering a wide range of activities as part of the “Salty Tour”. Under the topic “From salt mining to a repository for radioactive waste”, interested citizens can take part in different tours above and below ground with special thematic focuses. During this time, the Information Centre will also offer extended opening hours. Interested parties will be able to visit the centre in the evening. On Sunday, 24 June 2018, the action weeks will conclude with a special opening featuring a discussion and guided tours of the exhibition.

The dates in detail:

  • Tuesday, 5 June 2018, 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.: “Tour of the underground mining tools of the potash salt mining industry” (special underground tour of the Marie shaft)
  • Thursday, 7 June 2018, 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.: “Extended opening hours of the exhibition on the Morsleben repository”
  • Saturday, 9 June 2018, 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.: “Historical hike around the Marie shaft mining site” (approx. 4 km, including a tour of the site and a visit to the memorial stone and former border path)
  • Wednesday, 13 June 2018, 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.: “Extended opening hours of the exhibition on the Morsleben repository”
  • Thursday, 14 June 2018, 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.: “Tour of the underground witnesses of rock salt mining” (special mine tour of the Bartensleben shaft)
  • Saturday, 16 June 2018, 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.: “Above-ground tour of the Bartensleben shaft” (including headframe, fire brigade)
  • Tuesday, 19 June 2018, 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.: “Extended opening hours of the exhibition on the Morsleben repository”
  • Thursday, 21 June 2018, 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.: “What came after the salt? The Morsleben repository for radioactive waste” (tour of the Morsleben repository, Levels 1–3)
  • Sunday, 24 June 2018, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.: “Special opening of Info Morsleben, guided tour, and discussion” (guided tour and discussion at 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.)

The tours and hikes must be booked at least five working days before the desired date.

All activities are free of charge.

The Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung (BGE) is seeking a site for a repository for high-level radioactive waste and building the Konrad repository for low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste. The BGE is keeping the Morsleben repository open until decommissioning and is planning the retrieval of the radioactive waste from the Asse II mine. The BGE is a federally owned company within the portfolio of the Federal Environment Ministry. Its managing directors are Ursula Heinen-Esser (Chair), Dr Ewold Seeba (Deputy Chair), Professor Hans-Albert Lennartz (Commercial Manager) and Dr Thomas Lautsch (Technical Manager).
