The Management Board

The BGE is represented by the managing directors Stefan Studt, Beate Kallenbach-Herbert, Steffen Kanitz and Dr. Thomas Lautsch.

Stefan Studt, Chairman of the Management Board

Stefan Studt studied law with specializations in the areas of commercial and tax law as well as administrative law. Between 2014 and 2017, Studt was Minister of the Interior and Federal Affairs of the State of Schleswig-Holstein. Prior to this, he held various prominent management positions in the state authorities and ministries, including as head of the State Chancellery in Kiel. As Chairman of the Management Board, Stefan Studt is responsible for the divisions: Human Resources, Corporate Organization, Legal, Corporate Communications, Process Monitoring, Risk Management and Corporate Planning as well as International Affairs.

Beate Kallenbach-Herbert , member of the management board

Beate Kallenbach-Herbert holds a degree in mechanical engineering. She was Head of Nuclear Technology and Plant Safety at the Öko-Institut in Darmstadt, by the end of 2018. There she focused on the disposal of radioactive waste, the design of processes and management structures taking into account stakeholder and public participation as well as safety management, safety culture and environmental impact assessments. Beate Kallenbach-Herbert was also a member of the Waste Management Commission (ESK) and the Swiss Deep Geological Repositories Expert Group (ESchT) of the Federal Environment Ministry.

As a member of the management board, Beate Kallenbach-Herbert is responsible for the commercial areas of the BGE.

Steffen Kanitz, Member of the Management Board

Steffen Kanitz holds a degree in business administration with a focus on controlling and business finance. Between 2013 and 2017 he was a member of the German Bundestag and was a member of the Commission for the Storage of Highly-Radioactive Waste. Until his appointment to the management of BGE, Kanitz represented the interests of the BGZ Society for Interim Storage mbH (BGZ) as Executive Vice President.

Steffen Kanitz is responsible for the following divisions: site selection, product control, IT, research and development and knowledge management.

Dr. Thomas Lautsch, Technical Director

Dr. Thomas Lautsch is a graduate mining engineer. Before accepting the position as managing director of the Deutsche Gesellschaft zum Bau und Betrieb von Endlagern für Abfallstoffe mbH (DBE) in 2014, he held various senior positions, most of them in the coal mining industry in Germany and abroad. At the DBE he was responsible for the technical areas of the group of companies - including the mines in Salzgitter (Konrad shaft), Morsleben and Gorleben.

At BGE, Dr. Lautsch is responsible for the technical areas with the Konrad and Morsleben repositories and the Asse and Gorleben mines. In addition, he is responsible for the cross-sectional area of technology and product control.
