BGE annual report for 2023 published: employees take centre stage

09/17/2024: How can we counter the shortage of skilled workers? What do employees appreciate about working at the BGE? Find out more in the 2023 annual report.

The BGE Annual Report 2023 puts the focus on employees.
The Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung (BGE) also faces major challenges due to the shortage of labour and skilled workers. In the past three years, the federally owned company has seen its workforce grow by around 12.6%. For the future, the BGE also faces the question of how to better retain employees and attract new ones. The annual report for 2023 also addresses these topics.

In 14 portraits, BGE employees offer personal insights into their work at the BGE. A radiation protection officer at the Konrad repository, a master electrician at the headquarters in Peine, an environmental protection officer at the Morsleben repository and a geologist responsible for site selection describe their professional experiences. The various employees talk about how they came to the BGE, what they like most about their work and what motivates them on a day-to-day basis.

Iris Graffunder, Chair of the BGE Management Board, is pleased that “the detailed aspects of the portraits vary just as much as people themselves. But the desire to learn new things and develop as a person is a common thread running through all the stories.”

Guest article from science, annual financial statements and management report

The annual report also approaches the topic of employee retention from a scientific perspective. In his guest article on trust and communication, Professor Werner Widuckel from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg offers some initial pointers as to how companies can position themselves better in this regard. Among other things, he cites lifelong learning and greater diversity as key factors for success.

Of course, the annual report also contains all of the relevant figures for the past year. In its annual financial statements, the BGE gives a public account of the use of public funds for the disposal of radioactive waste in Germany. In the management report and the forecast, opportunity and risk report, it outlines the course of business for 2023 and provides an insight into the status of its projects and their costs.
