Endlager Konrad

Press release 9/22 - Konrad repository – open day on 27 August 2022

The BGE is offering a look behind the scenes at the future repository for low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste, complete with information stands and a multimedia supporting programme.

On 27 August, the Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung (BGE) is inviting people to an open day at the Konrad repository facility in Salzgitter. From 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., there will be information stands, tours of the site, a virtual reality dome and live music, as well as activities aimed specifically at children.

At the information stands, BGE staff will be on hand for face-to-face conversations in order to answer questions such as:

  • What will the finished repository look like?
  • How do you actually build a repository so deep underground?
  • How will waste be emplaced in the repository?
  • Why do we need the Konrad repository in Germany?
  • What opportunities for vocational training are available at the BGE?

Site tours, music and a programme for children

Site tours of Konrad Shaft 1 will be offered on an hourly basis, and visitors will be able to register for these tours in person on the day of the event. They can also look forward to a varied supporting programme with demonstrations by the in-house mine rescue team. A 360-degree dome cinema will round off the activities, providing a new perspective on the underground world.

“We’ve made excellent progress in the construction of the repository. Now, I’m delighted that we can provide all interested parties with insights into the construction site and behind the scenes. Especially given that the ‘repository question’ is a constant topic of political discussion, I hope that our visitors will enjoy the day and will be able to take the information on board with an open mind,” says Peter Duwe, project manager for construction of the Konrad repository.
