No. 12/17 - Making mistakes, but properly. Current information on site selection and Asse, Konrad and Morsleben projects

22 December 2017

The first issue of “Einblicke”, published by the BGE, will appear from 22 December. The magazine, produced by the Berlin Dummy editorial team, is successor to the “Asse-Einblicke” magazine from the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). This issue of “Einblicke”, which focuses on the topic of change, gives an overview of BGE projects and the challenges being faced. In April 2017, the young company BGE took on responsibility for the final repository projects at Asse, the Konrad mine and Morsleben. This reorganisation will ensure movement in the projects and will push forward the search for a final repository for highly radioactive waste – more efficiently and smoothly.

“Einblicke” gives an overview of the outlook for the final repository projects and how the journey will progress. In an interview, BGE Managing Director Ursula Heinen-Esser justifies the new organisation and its objectives. An article about the mistake culture in German authorities and companies and the question of how lessons can be learned from decades of planning and approval processes offer cause for reflection.

“Einblicke” appears in the Braunschweig, Wolfenbüttel, Salzgitter and Helmstedt regions as well as in the area around the Morsleben final repository.

The BGE is a federal government company in the Federal Environment Ministry business area. On 25 April 2017, the BGE took over responsibility from the Federal Office for Radiation Protection as operator of the Asse II shaft mine and the Konrad and Morsleben final repositories. Its other responsibilities include the search for a final repository site for the disposal of highly radioactive waste generated in Germany; this task is regulated by the site selection legislation [Standortauswahlgesetz StandAG] that came into effect in May 2017.

Managing Directors are Ursula Heinen-Esser (Chairwoman), Dr. Ewold Seeba (Vice-Chairman), Prof. Dr. Hans-Albert Lennartz (Commercial Manager) and Dr. Thomas Lautsch (Engineering Manager).
